Every listing on this site carries dates, and they do not all mean the same thing. Some describe what a parish published, some describe what we did, and only one of them is a claim about the schedule itself. This page defines each label so you can tell how much weight to put on a listing before you rely on it.
Verified
“Verified” means a person or a checking process reviewed the evidence behind a record and found it sound. For a source, that means the page really is the parish's or diocese's own, and it really says what the listing says it says. For a stream, it means three things together: the destination belongs to the church or its diocese rather than to a third party who re-posts it; it carries Mass or Divine Liturgy rather than some other content; and it supports the language claimed for it. A working video page on its own does not earn the word. Of the 13,400 sources behind the current listings, 10,556 carry a verification date.
Retrieved
“Retrieved” is the weaker of the two, and appears where a verification date is not recorded: it means we fetched the page on that date and transcribed what it said, without a separate substantive review. Most of these come from official diocesan Mass-time directories, which are reliable but voluminous. Where a listing shows “Retrieved … · verification date not recorded”, treat the detail as accurate to that fetch and confirm anything that matters with the parish. 2,844 sources are currently in this state.
Last checked
“Last checked” applies to stream destinations. It records the most recent time the link itself was requested and found to be reachable and still pointing at the right place. It is a technical liveness check on the URL, not a re-reading of the parish's schedule, and it does not renew the verification. Older check dates remain visible with a reminder to confirm with the parish. A check becoming older does not, by itself, remove a stream. The 332 churches with streams here have destinations that meet our listing checks, with expired services excluded.
Details last changed
This is the date the church record itself was last edited — a new phone number, a corrected address, a renamed parish, an added service. It tells you how recently anything about the listing moved. A record that has not changed in months is not necessarily stale; parish details change slowly. It is the schedule, not the address, that goes out of date fastest.
Schedule as of
Where a parish publishes a date range for a schedule — a summer timetable, a Lenten timetable, a school-year timetable — we store it and show the schedule only while it applies. Once the end date passes, those service times stop appearing rather than lingering as a stale claim. Where no range is published, the times are shown as ordinary weekly times with no implied end date, which is how the parish itself presents them.
Why we never say “live now”
A directory built from published schedules cannot know whether a camera is actually running. Streams fail, servers drop, a funeral displaces a Mass, a volunteer is away. Saying “live now” would be a claim we have no way to stand behind, and the cost of being wrong is someone sitting in front of a blank page at the one hour they set aside. So the online Mass page presents scheduled times and nothing more, and every watch button is an ordinary link to the parish's own page where the truth is visible. We would rather under-promise here than be confidently wrong.
For the same reason nothing on this site is embedded or restreamed. You always land on the church's own destination, and the church's own privacy practices apply from that point on.
Reporting a correction
The fastest way to fix a listing is to tell us. Use the contact page, or the “Suggest a correction” link at the bottom of any church profile, which passes the listing reference along so we know exactly which record you mean. What helps most: the church name and city, the specific detail that is wrong, what it should be, and a link to an official parish or diocesan page that supports the change. Please do not send private pastoral or financial information.
Parishes are welcome to submit their own details, including a stream destination, the same way. A submission from the parish, with a link to the parish's own page, is the strongest evidence there is.
